About the Course
This foundational level introduces students to the core technique of Bharatanatyam, the Adavus. Through structured training, students begin to understand the vital relationship between rhythm (Thalam) and syllables (Solkattu) in classical Indian dance. Students will learn to perform the following Adavus in three speeds (kalams):
Adavu Name | Number of Variations |
Thatadavu | 8 |
Nattadavu | 8 |
Paraval Adavu | 4 |
Kudittu Metta Adavu | 4 |
Theiya Theiye | 4 |
Theory Component
Solkattu and Thalam: Students will learn to chant the syllables (Solkattu) and identify the rhythm cycles (Thalam) corresponding to each Adavu.
Slokam: Dhyana Slokam – Students will be introduced to this invocatory verse and will be expected to recite and explain its meaning as part of their foundational theory.
This Grade 1 curriculum lays the essential groundwork for technical precision, rhythmic understanding, and spiritual context in the journey of Bharatanatyam training.
