BALLYMENA, 30 August 2025 — A new academy dedicated to Indian classical dance has opened in Ballymena, following an invitation and strong support from the Ballymena Malayali Association.
Karma Kala Kendram will offer classes in Bharatanatyam, Mohiniyattam and Kuchipudi, alongside choreography sessions tailored to students’ levels.
Enrolment
Registration will open at the Ballymena Malayali Association’s Onam celebration, where a dedicated Karma Kala Kendram desk will be available for sign-ups.
Accredited pathway
The academy’s curriculum follows an accredited syllabus aligned with the UK and Northern Ireland educational framework. Students can sit graded examinations and receive accredited certificates. These qualifications are recognised as extracurricular achievements, including for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (Physical section).
Students who master foundational technique and theory will also be offered opportunities to perform in leading modern theatres, marking their debut on professional stages.
Faculty
Weekend classes in Ballymena will be led by Aiswarya Mylapravan (BA Bharatanatyam). The overall dance education programme is overseen by Bijini JP.

Approach
The academy aims to situate Indian classical dance within Northern Ireland’s contemporary theatre scene and to engage with Indian art and culture from an academic perspective. Classes will be conducted in English and Malayalam.
Extending Onam greetings, the academy invited families and learners to participate in this new cultural initiative.
